HAL Central LIbrary Outreach Event - Oct 1, 2014
We had a very successful public outreach last night at the Howard County Central Library in Columbia. Amazingly, the skies cleared by sunset and the weather was good all evening. We started about 6:45 PM, and all of us were busy showing the beautiful moon to both children and adults almost continually until the library closed at 9. Many thanks to new HAL members Matt Wolverton, Pedro Gomes and Ernie Wright and to Chas Rimpo who came to help out!

I received a very nice thank-you note from the library, which says in part:
Thank you so much as always for coming out to Central last night for another fabulous evening under the stars.
We had over 150 people stop by to view the moon through your telescopes. I lost count of the "oh wows."
Everyone exclaimed over how great you all were with our youngest astronomers. You were all so kind and informative. It was such a great success.
Thanks again,

David,
Glad to help. The outreach event was awesome! It was great to get out and talk to folks and see the children react when they saw the moon. I'm looking forward to doing it again.
It was great talking to the members that arrived. I will miss the next few star parties due to other events but I am looking forward to more HAL activities.
Matt
Thanks for organizing the event David. I had a fantastic time. Public outreach is one of my favorite activities as I get a chance to give people a new perspective of the night sky and share in their discovery. I would be more than happy to do it again anytime.
It was a pleasure meeting the other members last night and I hope to come back from Kitt Peak next week with some great information about their programs and the lunar eclipse, of course.
Clear Skies,
Pedro
It's been a little while since I've done that kind of sidewalk
astronomy. Younger kids in particular don't always react right away to
what they see, but one of the librarians told me that a lot of the kids
come into the library energized and enthusiastic afterward, which is great.
I really enjoyed it, and I was in excellent company!
