My ATM Dobsonian Project

I was gifted a 10 inch mirror and assorted parts for it by Hari Nair. I have been extremely grateful for this, and have been documenting my journey of turning into my first DIY telescope. The mirror is a 10 inch with a 63 inch focal length. The mount will be a simple dobsonian mount made from plywood, and the OTA is constructed from a Sonotube concrete Form.

This is the mirror cell that holds the mirror in place. The angle brackets are in the box right now, but I do have them.

These are the bearings that will be mounted on the tube (probably on a tube box like a regular dobsinian) and will act as the alt-az controls for the mount.

This was the included focuser, it's 1.25 inch focuser. It's a helix design instead of rack and pinion and isn't 2 inches, so I bought a new one that should be here any day now.

The mirror with it's old coating freshly stripped off. a few days in an acid bath makes it look like a brand new mirror blank!

Another angle of the mirror pre-coating. The front is so polished that the nastiness you are seeing is actually the plastic container!

Had to place it in a film canister, because the aluminum cannot touch anything, even a cotton cloth, until it's had a chance to oxidize. That will take about a week.

Brand new Meade QX Wide field 15mm 1.25" eyepiece. Picked it up for $20, because I had a $10 gift card and it was on sale.

This is my focuser, a cheap rack & pinion to replace the helix focuser that came with my mirror. Much easier to focus, and has an adapter for both 2" and 1.25" eyepieces! I get to have the best of both worlds with this baby.

Finished OTA! ok, so it's not 100% finished, but it's darn close! Just need to retouch a few spots (including an extra set of holes!) and add a nice edging to the top and bottom of the tube. I'm thinking some black rubber tubing glued around the edges wou

Inside of the scope. I'll need to disassemble it and clean out some cardboard dust, and touch up a few spots, but it's pretty much done!
